What is an Inverted Nipple? Who Gets it?

The tip of the nipple that goes inside instead of going out, it is called an inverted nipple. Inverted nipples are also called retracted nipples. Sometimes the person can be born as a result of the anatomical structure, sometimes it can develop later. It can be seen in both men and women, and sometimes it can be seen only in one breast.

Inverted nipples can make breastfeeding difficult in some women. It makes it difficult for the baby to grasp the nipple. If you are considering becoming a mother, you can get information from your doctor or a breastfeeding counselor. However, in general, the inverted nipples are not a problem for mothers who want to breastfeed their babies because babies do not have difficulty in sucking since they grasp all of the pigmented part called areola. Sometimes, inverted nipples may also occur after the mothers breastfeeding their babies.

Since inversion, also known as inverted nipple is considered as a normal condition, it is not seen as a problem that needs to be treated by doctors. This condition is quite common and occurs in approximately one out of ten women. However, if this problem occurred in time and there is a specific disease or infection underlying it, this disorder should be treated.

There are several different methods that can be applied for people who want to get a treatment for inverted nipples:

  1. With the Hoffman Technique, the nipples are tried to be reversed by massaging the breast in the home environment with thumbs.
  2. With the suction devices, the nipple is reversed with a non-surgical method. Nipple is pulled out with these devices worn under the clothes and the nipple is stimulated and reversed. With the use of this device, the breast tissue relaxes and helps your nipples come out.
  3. Nipples can be kept upright by wearing piercings. It must be noted that the person who will perform this procedure should be licensed.
  4. With aesthetic operation, the nipples are defined and its position is turned outward. It is the best solution for a permanent result.

The primary purpose of doctors in such operations is to try to achieve the desired image in the breast without losing the incision scar, without losing the natural sensation of the nipple and breastfeeding function.

An inverted nippleis referred to as an inverted or retracted nipple. In the retracted nipples acquired afterwards, it will be examined to determine whether a disease lying behind causes this appearance. This may also be a sign of infection. If there has appeared an inversion on one or two of your nipples in a short time, you should consult your doctor.

Some of the causes that may lead to inversion in the nipple are:

  • Infection in the blocked milk duct (mastitis)
  • Aging: As you get older, the nipple may get inverted gradually. It is a benign process as it is not seen as a sign of any disease.
  • Mammary duct ectasia: it can be seen with an abnormal expansion of the mammary duct. The expanding milk duct is blocked, causing fluid to pile up. In case of infection, it is normal to see discharge, tenderness and rashes on the nipple.
  • Also in breast cancer inverted nipples can be seen. Swelling in the nipples, flaking, discharge or changes in the shape of the nipples are the conditions that you should consult a doctor when seen. It is also possible to feel a lump on your chest.
  • Breast surgery complications
  • An abscess formed under Areola.
  • Lung infection (tuberculosis)
  • Fibrocystic breast disease

In general, gradually appearing nipple inversion is not a sign of a disease. However, in case of sudden inversion in the nipples, you should consult your doctor and have your tests done. It is also necessary to look for the following symptoms: swelling, pain and discomfort in the nipple, redness, irritation, discharge, thickening and pitting of the breast skin. In these cases, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
